What began as a leisurely Sunday drive turned into a dramatic and unexpected rescue when a man lost control of his vehicle, crashing through two fences and ending up in a neighbor’s pool.
Residents on Byron Terrace in Redlynch, Cairns, were jolted into action around 11 a.m. Sunday after a white Lexus SUV barreled into their backyard, broke through a second fence, and splashed into the pool. The scene quickly escalated as the vehicle began to sink.
One of the homeowners, a quick-thinking woman, grabbed a hammer and smashed a car window to rescue the 61-year-old driver from nearby Palm Cove. Emergency services arrived shortly thereafter, transporting the man to Cairns Hospital for evaluation.
Swift Response by Emergency Services
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services dispatched two crews to the scene after police requested assistance. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, but initial reports suggest the driver may have experienced a medical episode behind the wheel, leading to the crash.
A neighbor from Norfolk Circuit, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted seeing the car speeding down Heritage Street before it collided with his home. “It could have been a very different scenario if this had happened after school hours,” he remarked, noting the potential danger to children in the area.
A Lucky Escape
Despite the dramatic crash, the driver managed to escape without serious injury. He was conscious by the time he was pulled from the vehicle and assured his rescuers that he was alright.
Queensland Police confirmed that the driver was unharmed following a check-up at the hospital. A police spokesman added, “We were called after a car crashed through a fence and into a pool. The driver has been able to escape the vehicle and suffered no injuries.”
This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn into an emergency and the importance of quick actions and community support in ensuring everyone’s safety.
